Definition
A regularizer measures how complex a function is. Regularized ERM minimizes with the regularization constant .
Formula
- Small : rich class, overfitting (small approximation, large estimation error). Large : underfitting.
- Side effects: unique solutions, easier optimization, stability ( is -strongly convex, ).
- Consistency: huge class, slowly (for example and with the stability bound).
- Examples: ridge (), lasso (), (NP hard). Implicit regularization by the optimizer: Implicit Regularization (Lecture 8).
